My top 8 newborn ESSENTIALS

Since this was my first pregnancy, I pretty much spent every waking moment researching which baby products I should get. I was made to feel that I needed every item I read on every list, and if I didn’t have it all motherhood would be the most horrific and difficult experience of my life. Purchase all these items and have a calm, simple experience…or proceed at your own risk. My husband was NOT into the idea of a bunch of unnecessary crap filling our house, and to be honest I wasn’t either. I knew deep down that we really didn’t need all of these items, but we definitely do need some. The question is, which ones?! There are pretty much two extremes out there. One being the over the top, buy everything, it will make your life so much easier, you will regret it if you don’t type. The other being the super minimalist, you really only need boobs and diapers type. I wanted to fall somewhere in the middle here, and even then I still had things I didn’t truly need. So, without further ado here is my top 8 newborn must haves:

1). Swing. Our swing was a gift from my best friend and let me tell you…it was A LIFE SAVER. (It was the Fisher Price My Little Snugapuppy Cradle and Swing) Olivia absolutely loved it from the first second we put her in it. We would set it to rock her gently and it had calming music you could turn on, along with a little mobile with a mirror on the bottom so she could look at herself (eventually) when her eyesight developed a bit more. We opted out of a bassinet, had the swing next to our bed, and she slept in it for a couple months! She used this to sleep at night, to take naps in during the day, and even to relax in while she was awake and playing with her toys.

2). Swaddles. Okay, everyone knows that a baby needs to be swaddled for the first few months until they are able to roll over. The hospital provides blankets that work okay at swaddling if you really wanted to keep it to a minimum. However, Liv would always come out of her swaddle which ended up turning into a blanket covering her face (which we all know in a world of SIDS is a big no-no). I ended up purchasing a swaddle that had velcro pieces that was much easier to wrap her up in and it actually stayed put! She slept much better when she was swaddled properly also. (It was the SwaddleMe Original Swaddle). We did have some aden +anais Swaddleplus blankets that worked pretty well also since they are much bigger than the hospital blankets and could be wrapped up pretty tightly. (She still was able to wiggle out of those sometimes, though).

3). Changing table. Duh, right?! Well, we didn’t feel the need to go out and purchase a brand new “changing table”. Instead, we had an Ikea Hemnes dresser that we sanded and painted white. We purchased a changing pad and an organizing bin to put diapers in and presto chango we had a changing table! It is the perfect height, we put a cabinet grip liner under the changing pad so it would stay put, set up her diapers, wipes, and creams and it worked absolutely great.

4). Car Seat Adapter. Holy moly, this is a big one. Having a car seat that was compatible with our car and stroller was HUGE. I can’t tell you how many times she would fall asleep in the car seat and we could easily transition her from the car to the stroller without waking her up. I can’t imagine having to strap her in and out every single time we did anything. Nightmare. Our car seat adapter was about $35 so we had one in my car, one in my husband’s car and one in my parent’s car for when they watched her. One car seat, multiple cars, strollers, no need to install and re-install the car seat each time we changed cars. Amazing.

5). Gas Relief Drops. Liv takes after her Dad (obviously) and had major gas problems for a while. She would cry her poor little head off as I heard gas bubbles rumbling around in her poor little tummy. Giving her a dose of the Little Remedies Tummy Relief Drops worked really well for her. It would help the gas pass pretty quickly and help her poop as well. I later learned that I had to cut out basically everything I ever loved out of my diet to avoid this being a huge problem, but for the time being and any slip ups along the way these drops helped a ton!

6). Diaper Cream. I started out using The Honest Company Healing Balm Soothing Protection & Relief for Sensitive Skin & Diaper Rash. It was okay but didn’t really do a whole lot. I will say it is good for preventative measures and moisturizing, just not exactly what I needed for redness or diaper rash. I have heard horror stories about diaper rashes, so I was super paranoid about this from day one. Any hint of redness and I am slabbing on a bunch of cream. Our pediatrician didn’t seem to be a huge fan of the Honest Company formula and recommended just plain ol’ Desitin. I planned to use the Honest Company for preventative measures and Desitin if she ever got an actual rash. Out of curiosity, I used the Desitin when she was a little red and it went away by the next diaper change. I was amazed! I’ve been using only Desitin ever since and haven’t had a problem yet!

7). Stroller. Okay, so I am a first time Mom and was lucky enough to receive a wonderful stroller from my parents as a gift. This is the only stroller I have ever used, so I can only tell you it is amazing. I did a lot of research when deciding which stroller I wanted, but I am not really qualified to compare it to any other. I will say it has been everything we could ever need and more. BOB Revolution. Yes.

8). Car Window Sun Shade. This didn’t seem like that big of a deal at first, until every time I had Liv in the car I would look back and see her poor face squinting with the sun shining right in her face. I would have to pull over and MacGyver some sort of contraption to block the sun not only for her comfort but to prevent her sensitive little skin from getting burnt! I immediately went to the store and got a car window sun shade that worked like a dream.

Well, that pretty much wraps it up! I have left out some of the obvious items such as clothes (I mean, come on), diaper bag, crib, etc. I hope this list helps all of you expecting mama’s out there and inspires you to grab the necessary and realistic items without breaking the bank! Thanks for reading!! Please comment below with any items you couldn’t live without, I would love to read them!
